Annual Youth Chicken Dinner Fundraiser '10

The Youth had another great BBQ Fundraiser on the first weekend in November. This is getting to be quite an FBC tradition. Thanks to everyone who made it happen!

-VBS this week has turned First Baptist Church into Saddle Ridge Ranch.

July 25 - 30, 6-9 pm, Supper included.
Little Cowpokes aged 4 - 11 can ride the range for some craft, music, recreation and Bible classes. Older Rangers aged 12 - 18 have a Round-Up of their own, too.
Everyone is invited.
Shoot, we even had one waddie show up who wasn't even out of diapers:

Our first night at Saddle Ridge included a cattle drive. Victoria, an old Bronc Buster from way back, had the Day Heard Shift:

That first night also featured Cowgirl Lindsay doin' some rope, whip and pistol tricks. Cowgirl Lindsay even gave each cowpoke a lasso to take home.

And a'course we got the best grubb around, causing us a stampede when Coosie Steve rolls out the Chuck Wagon and rings the dinner bell.

We'll be rustlin' up some games each night for the tenderfoots.

Don't forget to encourage your older Ranch Hands to come out, too.
We got us a wild bunch this year.

Valentine's Day Banquet 2010

Takin' the Short Bus to Town

So we jumped on the bus and hit the road to the bowling alley.

What I like about the bowling alley ....

.... is the strange way people bowl.

No two bowlers have the same technique.
Will threw side-armed, below, and bowled great.
I thought he was horsing around.
He wasn't.
And B, well, I'm sure nobody bowls like B:
And it's kind of fun, too, to see how people act after they score.

But sometimes it's all just a bit too much for anyone.

FBC Youth In Ministry

One great thing about our youth is that they usually are ready at the drop of a hat to help someone out. You have to ask them to help, mind you, they might not notice you requiring assistance, but when asked, they're there.

And a great thing about Billy and Doug leading our youth is that they are teaching our men to be men. To jump in and do the dirty jobs. To rescue a damsel in distress. To work.... hard.... even in the rain.

Even on a football-esque Sunday afternoon.

So when a single female in our church had been without water a few days, wasn't sure what was wrong, wasn't sure what to do.....

... our guys jumped right in. Replaced her pump in the rain at no labor cost to her.

That's what a church family is all about.

And, of course, the guys found a little time for a quick game of Ugg Ball

in which they used an old tire for a ball.

Bonfire & Bible Study

It's the time of year when our youth group takes their Sunday Night Bible Studies on the road. Usually, they end up at Busbee's around a bonfire.

Last night was their second bonfire this season.

For the first hour, there were only two girls present.

They were outnumbered.

Overlooked.

Bored.

So B dug out the tractor and took Marj on an innocent little redneck hayride.

While the guys were enjoying a manly round of the Hokey Pokey.

The girls roared through their game, hair flying, screams bellowing.
Hokey Pokey interrupted.
Guys: "Oh no. We are not gonna stand idly by while they ruin our fun."

The Hokey Pokey Hayride became a game of redneck dodge ball.

Marj yelled "Retreat!" and B had the pedal down the whole way back to the shed.

And I'm sure once all that energy was expended, Billy could settle them down around the fire for Bible Study time.

Rivalry in the Youth Group

It was kind of like Ohio St. vs Michigan.

or Alabama vs Auburn

or Clemson/Carolina

But 'cept smaller.

Wagener vs Pelion.

It's a faceoff.

The oldest rivalry in FBC Youth Group history.

Raymond Middleswarth took on Garrett Wood.

The bets around here were on Garrett.

However....

Middleswarth led his team to a 38-18 victory favoring a steady rushing attack with Pelion capping the game with 375 yards rushing.

And Pelion's kicker?

Yeah. She's a girl.

Sure. We have the whole thing on tape.

And for the news.... A fire in the concession booth at Silver Bluff has resulted in new county laws requiring all deep fryers to be used out of doors only.
Thanks to these kind gents for keeping the fries on our menu.

Look Up Lodge: The Games

Another major part of Look Up Lodge was the after-lunch games. Upon arrival at camp, campers are divided into teams and assigned a "color." Our color was black. Everything we did at camp, we did with our color group and made most of it a competition. Of course, Black team was the best.After lunch each day the teams would compete in crazy games. First, we'd have to put our war paint on - in our team color.--Sara and Doug (below) are showing you how fierce we looked in our black war paint.

Well... Doug doesn't look much different than a normal workday. But you get my drift.

Now, Mo, here is experiencing a transformation moment. You can see it in her eyes, she is being transformed into a machine.

A fighting machine.

Marj was born for the war paint. Brielle doesn't seem too sure, but Marj's into it all right:

For the water game, each team took a trash can in the lake and put some team members in the water and some team members back up on the docks.

The players on the docks were to throw balls into the trash cans. The ones in the water were to catch stray balls and toss them back to the dock teammates to re-try. Each team could post one "guard" around an opposing team's trashcan.

We didn't do so well....

With this next game, the object was to protect your "castle" (the alien looking silver ball object). Marj and Brielle are doing a great job guarding our castle while Chessa stands behind with our staffer, Chris.

So each team throws balls hard at the castles to knock them down.

(Not sure how Marj and B got this job)

We were hot with this game, baby, HOTT.

The best game, the one in which I threatened to leave camp if they involved me..... was the mud day.
They had an obstacle course to complete, most of which was covered in mud, covered in mesh to crawl under, and had staffers scattered about to trip you up or throw mud on the kids.

Marj was in the lead for our team, or maybe second, I don't remember, but you can see Grayson rapidly approaching and when she jumped in the mud hole, a kid jumped right on her back and slowed her down & Grayson took the lead. I'm not sure which one completed it first. Before they got near the finish line, Connie and I had taken off at top speed so as not to get slimed by the kids post-run.

Look Up Lodge: Skits & Activities

The youth are allowed a T-tiny bit of free time each day at Look Up Lodge.

During their free time, they can do the zip line, the high swing, trampolines, play basketball or tennis, do pedalboats or kayaks, go fishing and swimming, hike around the lake, visit the canteen.....etc.

We got Jon to agree to pedal our pedalboat while Morgan, Connie and I rode leisurely. Then we tied three kayaks to the back to see if he could pedal them, too. He did!

If they didn't want to do any of the above, there was one more thing a lot of the guys liked to do: Stand around and dazzle the ladies.

Each night in Funapalooza, the staffers would perform silly skits. There were one or two week-long skits, like a series, each night's skit building upon the previous night's.

In one of these serial skits, Jamal played a character who was a high-style Hollywood Talent Advisor who gave great advice to artists on how to improve their act. Not shown in this picture are the sunglasses he usually wore. Jamal was awesome.

What Do You Need To Be Happy?

The one thing Jesus needed to be happy was a close relationship with God. Jesus found the sole source of life in his father. The delight of his life was to delight his father.
It was genuinely what made him happy.

(everything I'm saying in this post comes from talks given by Greg Boone, Executive Director, Look Up Lodge,)

What is the goal of the disciples of Jesus Christ? To be like Jesus. But we don't grasp the reality of that. While we can't fully attain this until Heaven, the goal is to get as close as possible. It is not religious activities, it is not something external. The people Jesus most rebuked were the devout people. He called them "white washed tombs" and "vipers."
Jesus doesn't speak this negatively about anyone else.

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
- Romans 12:2

The word "transformed" is translated from "metamorphia." It is not overly dramatic for God to use the word metamorphosis. Metamorphosis refers to an inside change that results in an outside change. The outside change does not precede the inside change.
What we genuinely need from Jesus is the capacity to love people. Loving people is the test of where you are in the metamorphosis process. Loving people is not the end goal, it is just a test of where you are in the process of transformation. The end goal is the close relationship with God as Jesus had, where God genuinely is our ultimate desire in life.

God wants to give us this capacity to love people unselfishly. Almost every relationship we have in life is based on selfishness. What God wants to do is to change that. How in the world can we do that? There's only one way and it's the same way Jesus did it.

By finding our sole source of life and happiness in God alone.

"Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
- John 17:3

If you want to get to know what's really important to someone, you spend time together, talk, be together. What they talk about is what they care about. And it's like that with God - the things He talks about most in the Bible are the things He cares about most. How do you get to know Him? Spend time with Him, learn who He is and what He cares about.
You probably aren't living the Christian life right if you think it's
1) complicated, or 2) easy.

What is the test of where you are in the metamorphosis process -- this process of getting closer to God, the process of finding Him as your main source of happiness?
It's the quality of your relationship with other human beings.
How you treat people. How you love people.

It's a lot easier to perform religious acts .
It's a lot harder to genuinely love people totally unselfishly.

"..that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ.."
Not "that they might be a good missionary" or "that they might be a good parent" or "that they might have a good church."
Just: "That they may know you, the only true God & Jesus Christ."

"My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."

- Jeremiah 2:13

Two sins? Really, just two sins? Amazing how important this is. Everything has its roots back in this.

When we focus on God, sin begins to get squeezed out of our lives.

If you're going to become this thing that God wants you to be, you are going to struggle in the metamorphosis process. Caterpillar to pupa to butterfly requires a serious struggle. Without the struggle, it just doesn't happen. This puts a different spin on pain and suffering, on teenage rebellion, marriage difficulties, and cancer and sickness, doesn't it?

When you understand who God is and why He does what He does, you'll stop asking "Why?"

The Answer: Trying to make you more like Jesus.

Look Up Lodge '09: Goin' to the Chapel . . .

Two things one learns about Look Up Lodge, rather quickly, is 1) Routine is comfortable and safe and 2) Routine is never routine, it can always be altered.

300? 500? 700? people march up the hill two times a day for chapel. Routine: each group gathers in pretty much the same spot to wait for the chapel doors to open. Routine: each group files into the chapel according to group color. Altered Routine: do something crazy and different each time.

Here's how Ethan decided to enter the pew one day:

Before the serious chapel begins, Look Up offers "Funapalooza." These are silly songs designed to get everyone excited and burn off a little energy.

"It's gonna be a boys day, boys day, a heavy metal toys day...."

"It's gonna be a girls day, girls day, pink and purple pearls day..."

We are so proud of our FBC Youth Alumni who are now working at Look Up Lodge. It was a blessing to see them up there working after having taken them up as campers for so many years. God is good.

So we arrived at the Colonial Life building and joined Tina & friends, who had held an awesome spot in line for us, right up front at the doors. We stood there for a half hour or so until they began admittance to the concert.

Tom S. had scoped the scene and knew exactly what seats we should try to get, so he was designated Line Leader. And as you can see here in this MOB, it was a good thing we had a line leader so nobody got lost. As you can also see, 1) nobody is following our line leader and 2) our line leader is zealous about his job.

We found the seats and they were definitely great seats.

The crew is happy.

Happy pappy.

As if things couldn't get any better. . .

Toby Mac was awesome, as usual.

He is "a creative force, an artistic maverick and a prophetic voice for racial reconciliation, social justice and a fierce devotion to faith & family." I can't say it any better than this quote from his website.

The artists & administrators involved in Winter Jam give selflessly & tirelessly to reach our youth for Christ. The admittance fee is low enough for kids to afford and is far below what these artists could charge for their performances. They performed 35 times in 2 months this year. That's a lot of travel and very little sleep & "a handful of dreams and heart full of God."

Ski Trip Bible Study

We began & ended each day on the ski trip with a time of Praise & Worship and a group Bible Study. It was fun to get the whole gang together and recap or plan our day and it was inspiring to hear their thoughts about following God and how it impacts their day 2 day living.

Tom led the songs with Will Rutland and Raymond Middleswarth on guitars. Acoustic guitar, majestic mountains, cozy log cabin..... you can't beat that.

Pastor Billy was teaching from The Tough Sayings of Jesus, by Michael Kelley, a young writer and editor for Lifeway. The study was "in your face" tough, a daring look at Jesus' sayings that addresses the tough questions we often leave unasked. We wanted the kids the know that faith doesn't mean not asking questions. The study also included the historical and cultural aspects that surrounded the people Jesus interacted with. It was interesting to see the parallels to our lives today.

The Bible study time and the spiritual atmosphere laced throughout the whole trip is really the whole point of the trip. It's spiritually refreshing to get away from the normal pace of life, away from our peers, away from the tv and electronic games. I think we all came back refreshed, pumped, challenged. It is such a blessing to watch the youth grow and to hear them speak up and share their lives.

Here's a video of some of our singing. I think the praise time was a little weak because we didn't have the written lyrics. Be sure to check out Grayson at the very end of the video. He was really getting into it.

There were many church youth groups in Gatlinburg while we were there this past weekend. I had the opportunity to meet a few people from these groups while we travelled the ski lift together. I met a few kids from Columbia/Irmo. So today I was checking out a blog I like in San Francisco and there was a live feed alert from Wagener suggesting other SC blogs. So I followed that link and found a blog post called "Youth Ski Trip 09", so I followed it to see if it would take me back to this blog, to see if it was referring to our youth ski trip.

Youth Ski Trip, '09

We just returned from our Youth Ski Trip to Gatlinburg, TN.

Billy did a study on "The Tough Sayings of Jesus." Tom, Will and Raymond led the Praise & Worship. It was very powerful. I will say more about that in another, upcoming post.

We all (35 of us) had a great time and got along well.

There were no legendary fights and no monumental injuries.

Christie had everything planned out expertly, no time was wasted and nothing was below expectation.

The youth were well behaved in the restaurants.

The chaperones were well behaved in public.

We spent a few hours at an arcade. You'll have to read about that on my personal blog in an upcoming post. I definitely have a few things to say about that day.

And of course, we went skiing. Well. Tom and I did. The others went snow-boarding. We are old school.

We popped into a Hollywood Star Cars Museum. Now that was interesting. Here are a few of the youth in the Flintstones' Flintmobile. That's Will Rutland with the orange hair. That orange hair was a big help identifying him on the ski slopes.

Then there was the afternoon of car racing.

That was.... well.... let's say "competitive."

Connie, Doug and Tom especially got caught up in it. Connie was, well, kicked off the course actually.

Jackie & I thought it was too cold and not a whole lot different than our normal afternoon drives so we didn't last long.

Our youth group is absolutely a joy to be around. Well mannered, loving towards each other, a great sense of humor and a deep interest in knowing God.

Facebook & The Christian

Justin pastors a ministry to twenty-somethings in the San Francisco area in which they focus on reaching the community. What night! We had over a 100 youth in attendance! God is good! We had music, testimonials, drama performances, and message from Pastor Todd Cook.

Youth BBQ Fundraiser

Thanks to all who helped!

The BBQ fundraiser was a big success. We sold 450 plates. Almost everybody who worked did 9 hours or more. Volunteers from all ages helped out.

It was such a blessing to be out in the community and visit with so many people. Tyler Brothers were having their Big Christmas Sale, so the town was packed.

The guys started cooking at 4:00 a.m. I took them my famous Monkey Bread around 6:30 while Jackie, Brielle and Kelsy cooked them a hearty breakfast around 7.

Many of the youth were there that early, too, and our adult volunteers showed up soon after.

Several of the youth rode bikes around town and sold more tickets and advertised the cookout.

We have such a great church family, I love to watch the youth, they are changing so much. I love seeing them around town at non-church events. I love it when they give me a hug or a huge hello.

I love seeing the adults and senior adults mingle with the teenagers. I don't think all churches are like that. I really think we have a special homestyle family feel.

-

I love how we can count on each other & we help each other & socialize & have fun.

I hope the teenagers take this with them throughout their lives into other churches and other communities. I hope they fondly remember these days, too, much as I remember the church of my youth and childhood.

Finally it was show time. We were ready to rock. Our first dinners were served early, I think it may have been 10:30.

Right around this part of the day, Mrs. Mae Busbee brought two of her homemade, piping hot pecan pies. Well, as soon as they were priced, I purchased one & I hightailed it out of there. I went to the Dolla General, bought a cold can of whipped cream, sped to my house and got me a big ol piece. (trust me, it's there somewhere) I left everybody down there working hard and I took me a Yum-O break. Yes, I did... but you know what . . .

Youth Sumo Wrestling

It's been a big weekend -- Light the Night, 5th Quarter, Last Home Football Game, Steak Dinner Bonfire, and Sumo Wrestling.

WHAT IS MISSION FRIENDS? A place for preschoolers, birth through kindergarten, where they become aware of God's love, and they learn that others need to hear about this good news! They are involved in learning, praying, giving, and doing missions, also learning of missions work in North America and throughout the world. Each month, preschoolers learn about a missionary in a different place. Led by Mrs. Tina Summers.

WHAT IS GIRLS IN ACTION (GA)?
Led by Mrs. Jennifer Smith, GA is a comprehensive missions education program, for girls in grades 1-6, which includes praying for missions, engaging in missions action and witness, learning about missions, developing spiritually toward a missions lifestyle, participating in the work of the church and denomination, and supporting missions. Through participation in GA, girls grow in their knowledge, understanding, and application of the Bible. They also learn from the example of missionaries, believers, and hands-on mission action what it means to actively engage in ministering to others with the compassion of Christ.

WHO ARE ROYAL AMBASSADORS?
A Royal Ambassador (RA) is a boy in grades 1-6 committed to living out the RA Pledge. This pledge is part of personal and chapter (group of RAs) accountability. Led by Mr. Jihnny Harrison, Royal Ambassadors (RAs) is a Bible-centered, church-based, Southern Baptist mission education organization for boys in grades 1-6. The RA Motto, "We are Ambassadors for Christ," not only gives the organization its name, but also gives the boys and leaders a lifestyle goal. This motto is taken from Scripture, specifically 2 Corinthians 5:20.

What can I say about your child? That he or she is a precious lamb in God's eyes. We sometimes forget that children are a blessing not a curse. I know they get into trouble, I also know they where born with a sin nature that they must battle everyday. How they turn out is a direct consequence of our obedience to God (Proverbs 22:6, "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it").

A Wednesday night kids ministry for 1st through 6th Grade. At 5:00 we have recreation, 5:30 we have music. Pre-School through 6th grade we will enjoy dinner at 6:00 and Bible Study at 7:00. Come join us for a time of fellowship and fun!
